Chinese couple married for 80 years

hinanews, Shijiazhuang, Oct. 5 (By Lu Da, Pan Haitao) - This October 8th, at Fangbei District of Hebei province's Shijiazhuang, a couple called Zhang Jiuyu and Guo Changlan will celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary. It was learned that they are hopeful of breaking the current Guinness world record in the longest marriage of 80 years and 14 days held by a British couple.

Reporters came earlier today to this small district located at Shijiazhuang's Yuhuadong Road and met these two elderly persons aged 96.

According to the daughter-in-law of this elderly couple, they were married in October of 1925 when both turned sixteen. This means they have walked the path of life hand in hand for eighty years.

During these eight decades, they witnessed the brutal invasion of the Imperial Japanese army as well as the establishment of new China and the happy retirement they enjoyed after the country opened up and liberalized its economy. They have but one son and four generations of 13 members live under one roof, with the elderly in good health and the young respectful of the elders, the very picture of a happy extended family.

Regarding how they can live so long and keep their marriage together, their son Zhang Shizhong said the key is that both parties keep an open mind and a good spirit. They have been through plenty of ups and downs in life, but still treat each other with respect. When he was young, Zhang Jiuyu liked sports activities such as soccer. When he got older, he switched to walking and still maintains today a set of aerobic exercise he invented himself. Guo Changlan herself never worked outside the home and was keeping the house in order and her son properly taught with no complaints and no temper tantrums. Zhang Shizhong said "in my memory, my parents never quarrel and since they both retire they seem to like each other even more."
